John Hindy, SSgt USMC
John Hindy is a Reconnaissance Marine in the United States Marine Corps reserve. He lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and attends the University of Alabama as a full time student. In February of 2012, John started Alabama Crossfit - a fitness gym of which he is the head coach - and has since recruited over 50 members.
John Hindy's service in the military has led him through some of the most dangerous places in the world, and he has experienced near-fatal situations numerous times. However, if asked to recall the most terrifying moment of his life, he will tell you that it was the EF-4 tornado of April 27, 2011, that razed his home in Tuscaloosa, and took almost everything from him and so many others.
This experience left John with more than just a harrowing story. It left him with a deep desire to help others who experience total loss in times of disaster. As fate would have it, shortly after the events of that tragic day, John went to Dallas to meet with fellow Marine, friend, and Honor Courage Commitment, Inc. founder, Andrew Nguyen.
With Andrew's guidance and assistance, John was able to return home to Tuscaloosa, with a desire to pass along the generosity that others had shown him during his recovery. Committed to his social responsibility as a Marine veteran, John established Beds for 'Bama. Together with the others that helped make it possible, Beds for 'Bama was able to help add regularity back into the lives of the tornado victims and provide them with a bed to sleep on.
Honor, courage, and commitment - three words that define the United States Marine Corps - have allowed those who served to continue their service to the American people. Through his dedication and generosity, John Hindy has turned disaster into inspiration, and destruction into recovery.
